Gender codes in Media

  • Ritualization of submission
  • Unaware / anxious expression
  • Lying down pose

  • Awkward contorted pose

  • Lying down positon
  • Anxious expression
  • Almost assuming fetal position

In my humble opinion, advertisers using elements of pornography in ads to catch the attention of people is a scummy tactic, reserved for those who have nothing interesting to sell to you. They lack the creativity on their own to draw your attention with clever slogans or just well designed ads so in compensation they use sex to sell to you. No matter how unfortunate it may be.

  1. Cole,

I feel that this project is well done! I like that you pointed out how each advertisement was enforcing the gender stereotypes, as some people may be blind to it because we are so used to seeing them nowadays. I also felt that you stated your opinion well and you made great points in why this is still an ongoing issue today.

  2. I agree with you when you say that modern day advertisers who resort to commercial realism to sell their products do lack creativity when designing these types of ads, however your comments do make me wonder what do you think are interesting products to sell? If the companies behind these ads are simply trying to conform to mainstream media which has become more sexualized as we move forward in an online society, does this mean consumers should stop buying their products to send the message that their ads are not working, or that we as consumers should not be interested at all?

Overall you had some great points. Good job!
